Feet on the Street – What is really important
Today, we all know and feel the economic uncertainty that is reported upon multiple times each day. This coupled with our work obligations and family life, it is easy to focus only on the here and now.
Fortunately, sometimes you get a reminder of the bigger picture and what is really important.
I get the privilege of inspecting some of our projects, seeing the progress and the finished working product first-hand.
On Good Friday, I performed the site inspections for two projects, a hospital and a treatment facility.
The hospital hosts 24 beds. The ownership is awaiting licensing and will begin operating in the coming weeks. I have never been inside a facility like this one. As you can imagine, security is at the forefront. The design, construction and tamper-proof materials used are crucial for ensuring both patient and staff safety. As I walked with the Administrator, I learned about the unit and the patients it will serve. Both children and adults will walk through their doors, and they are the ones suffering from the most serious mental illnesses. The biggest challenge is long-term placement. After treatment, most children return to their homes. Sadly, many adults do not have a home base and will become repeat patients. Regardless of the challenges, their commitment to care is unwavering.
The treatment facility employs 24 additional beds that assist transitional youth and young adults, helping them overcome addiction and providing resources for a new start. The property was originally built as a Post Office in 1935. Previously, it operated as a residential care facility. Today, construction is complete, and this live-in treatment facility is operating at capacity. I met with the Program Director. For over eleven years she has been helping countless patients, including men and women, improve their lives. The facility is beautiful, and the program is run like a tight ship. While walking and learning, she explained the program and interacted with residents. She commands respect, while balancing enforcement with love and empathy. The desire to care for these young girls, and to see them successfully transition back on their own, burns brightly within her and her team.
The people I met this day are angels who walk among us. The care and compassion they provide is extraordinary.
These visits were a sobering and humbling reminder of the importance of the work we all perform.
I ended the week with a renewed sense of gratitude for life’s blessings and the opportunity to play a small role in the creation of these essential treatment facilities.
